This year we are excited to announce that as a part of SMU Family Weekend, we will be supporting Family Gateway, an organization that provides transitional housing and services for homeless families with children in Dallas County.  We will ask parents and students to provide household items when they arrive on campus for the weekend.  Detailed information is available below.

Families traveling from out of town may want to arrive on Thursday, September 22, as the weekend will kick off on the afternoon of Friday, September 23 with the Family Luncheon. More information will become available on this site closer to Family Weekend.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Boulevard on the weekend of September 23-25, 2016 for "Home in the Heart of Texas"!

Supporting family gateway

SMU Student Foundation is excited to announce the fourth ever Family Weekend Charity Project.  This year, we invite SMU Families to donate items for Family Gateway.

Family Gateway's mission is to lead "the Dallas community to end child homelessness by providing innovative and comprehensive housing, social, and educational services to homeless children and their families." Family Gateway provides transitional housing to homeless families with children, while also providing the family with other services to help them get back on their feet. Believing education is the key to ending the generational cycle of homelessness, Family Gateway keeps families together and empowers homeless families to embrace a life of hope and promise. With hundreds of families on campus for Family Weekend, we can donate enough items to make a huge difference in the lives of these families in need of help.

Below are some of the items, though not all, that Family Gateway is in need of. We invite you to bring any items to Family Weekend with you to drop off in support of Family Gateway:

  • Soap
  • Razors
  • Shaving Cream
  • Shampoo / Conditioner
  • Stick Deodorant
  • Toothbrushes / toothpaste
  • Combs / Brushes
  • Lotion
  • Facewash
  • Tissues
  • Feminine Hygiene Products
  • Toilet Paper

Boxes will be located throughout the Hughes-Trigg Student Center and other locations for the duration of Family Weekend.  If you don't have an opportunity to travel with these items or purchase them in Dallas, we invite you to bring items like soap and shampoo which can be found in your hotel room during your stay.
